Translating documents for Canada, from Abidjan

Short answer

English-speaking Canadian universities regularly require a certified English translation of academic documents, alongside the French original. Federal immigration services accept French, but institutions, professional bodies and employers set their own rules. Budget 12,000 FCFA per page, or 60,000 FCFA for the degree-transcript-birth-certificate pack, with delivery in 72 hours.

Canada is by a wide margin the first destination of our clients. Our office arranges sworn translations produced and certified by experts accredited by the Court of Appeal of Abidjan, and a large share of the files we handle head for Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Quebec City or Moncton, for study, permanent residence or a work permit.

One misunderstanding comes up again and again, and it is expensive. Canada is officially bilingual, which many applicants read as "my French documents will be accepted everywhere". They will not. An English-speaking university in Ontario or British Columbia routinely asks for a certified translation of academic records; a professional body or an employer may do the same. The useful question is never "does Canada speak French?" but "who, precisely, is going to read this document?".

Which documents are usually required?

Hands filling in an application form
  • Degree certificate and full transcripts, for a study application
  • Birth certificate issued within the last six months
  • Police clearance certificate, the Ivorian bulletin n°3, recently issued
  • Detailed employment certificates, for economic immigration programmes
  • Marriage certificate and children's birth certificates, for family files
  • Driving licence, for a provincial exchange

Treat that as a starting point, not a rule. Every organisation publishes its own list. Ask for it in writing, send it to us, and we will tell you what genuinely needs translating. We would rather quote honestly than inflate an invoice.

Translation and credential assessment are two different things

This is the distinction that trips up most applicants. The sworn translation renders your document in English and carries the expert's stamp and accreditation number. The credential assessment is produced by a designated organisation that compares your Ivorian qualification with the Canadian system. Two services, two providers, two invoices, and an order: the assessor works from the translation. Its quality therefore feeds directly into the assessment result. A course unit rendered badly is credits lost.

Why the calendar matters more than the price

Police clearance certificates and birth certificates have short validity periods against Canadian requirements. Work backwards from your filing date: the document must still be within its validity window on the day you file; legalisation, when required, takes five to ten working days; translation takes 72 hours, or 24 hours with the rush option. Collecting documents too early is exactly as damaging as collecting them too late.

Frequently asked questions

Canada is bilingual, do I really need a translation?

Federal immigration services accept French. But an English-speaking university, a provincial professional body or an Ontario employer may well require a certified English version. Ask the receiving organisation in writing: their answer decides it, not the general rule.

Is translation the same as an Educational Credential Assessment?

No, and confusing the two costs weeks. A sworn translation renders your document in English with an accredited expert’s certification. A credential assessment is carried out by a designated organisation that places your Ivorian degree within the Canadian system. The second usually requires the first.

What does a complete Canadian file cost?

The academic pack, degree, transcript and birth certificate, about five pages, is 60,000 FCFA. Beyond that, 12,000 FCFA per additional page in English. Send your list of documents on WhatsApp and you will get a firm price, usually within 15 to 20 minutes.

Do you convert my marks into a GPA?

No, and no sworn translator should. Converting a grade average is an act of assessment, not translation, and it belongs to designated evaluation bodies. The expert reproduces the Ivorian scale exactly as it appears on your transcript; the institution then applies its own conversion.
